the Natural park of Tapada de Mafra

The Royal Tapada de Mafra


With an area of 1187 hectares, the Royal Tapada de Mafra was created in 1747 with the aim of providing an appropriate involvement of the Palace, to provide a summer space for recreational for the king and his court and to provide wood and other products to the Convent.
At the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, it has become to be a space of recreation and hunting for the kings and their entourage.
Today, this huge park with 1187 hectares is fully protected by a wall with 16 km long, and it is still possible to hunt deer, wild boar and gamos in a very controlled away.
In Tapada de Mafra it can also be find wolves, foxes, ginetes, bag-tails, an enormous variety of birds, including the very rare eagle Bonelli.
The trips in this park can be achieved through guided tours, walks on foot or in a small train that exists in the Park.
